True Blood, Season 601 “What Are You, Really?”

Governor of Louisiana, Truman Burrell played by the talented Arliss Howard had me thinking today as I listened to his speech to the press. As he outlined the reasoning behind his move against the vampires it reminded me of Nazi Germany. This is not the first time that True Blood has drawn parallels between its narrative and Nazis.

Governor Burrell outlines his plans for curfews, government shutdown of vampire run businesses and eventually his experimentation on vampires. All parallels to the Nazi Kristallnacht, Human Experiments and the Final Solution. We’ve seen promo spots where vampires are being dragged behind vehicles, tortured and killed in the name of peace.

At least 91 Jews were killed in the attacks, and 30,000 were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps.^[2]Jewish homes, hospitals, and schools were ransacked, as the attackers demolished buildings with sledgehammers.^[3] Over 1,000 synagogues were burned (95 in Vienna alone) and over 7,000 Jewish businesses destroyed or damaged.^[4]^[5]Martin Gilbert writes that no event in the history of German Jews between 1933 and 1945 was so widely reported as it was happening, and the accounts from the foreign journalists working in Germany sent shock waves around the world.^[3]The Times wrote at the time: “No foreign propagandist bent upon blackening Germany before the world could outdo the tale of burnings and beatings, of blackguardly assaults on defenseless and innocent people, which disgraced that country yesterday.”^[6]

The pretext for the attacks was the assassination of the German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Herschel Grynszpan, a German-born Polish Jew resident in Paris. Kristallnacht was followed by additional economic and political persecution of Jews, and is viewed by historians as part of Nazi Germany’s broader racial policy, and the beginning of the Final Solution and The Holocaust.^[7]

Nazi human experimentations were a series of medical experiments on large numbers of prisoners, mainly Jews (including Jewish children) from across Europe, but also in some cases Roma, Soviet POWs and disabled non-Jewish Germans, by the Nazi German regime in its concentration camps mainly in the early 1940s, during World War II and the Holocaust. Prisoners were coerced into participating; they did not willingly volunteer and there was never informed consent. Typically, the experiments resulted in death, disfigurement or permanent disability, and as such are considered as examples of medical torture. At Auschwitz and other camps, under the direction of Dr. Eduard Wirths, selected inmates were subjected to various hazardous experiments which were designed to help German military personnel in combat situations, develop new weapons, aid in the recovery of military personnel that had been injured, and to advance the racial ideology backed by the Third Reich.^[1]Dr. Aribert Heim conducted similar medical experiments at Mauthausen. Carl Værnet is known to have conducted experiments on homosexual prisoners in attempts to cure homosexuality. After the war, these crimes were tried at what became known as the Doctors’ Trial, and revulsion at the abuses perpetrated led to the development of the Nuremberg Code of medical ethics.

I started researching photos of well known Nazi upper echilon and came across Adolf Eichmann’s passport photo that he used emigrate to Israel after WWII. Eichmann was responsible for help care out the Final Solution by the Nazis. I am sure that TB used this at least as part of the character development for Governor Burrell. What do you think?

Yep. I was reluctant to bring this up — and really, and more scarily, there are plenty of parallels to some horrifyingly similar today’s politicians — but I got so, so eeked out by the Governor last night. As a Jew, as a person, as someone who studied this … Just … my skin crawled. He scares me more than Billith and Warlow put together.

Gov. is clearly in cahoots with vampires just like the Nazis were with Russell Edgington and his wolves. [and Bill and Lorena probably hung around Auschwitz getting their kicks. Sorry not sorry.] And right now, ‘vampires’ means Billoch no matter what tripe he’s trying to sell us.

Agreed stillhidden, I found the Governor very scary. He is definitely one of our new villains. And I personally think scarier than Russell ever thought of being. Perhaps because he is human. Arliss Howard has hit the character out the park IMO. Perfection. Another great find, TB casting department.

Remember from the onset of last night’s episode that we saw the narrative from Bill Compton’s POV. I am sure that last night’s events with Jessica last night did not happen as shown.
